The Rise Of The NES
Well welcome everyone to my best article yet. I will probably have a better and more depressing one soon(Gave away my next article) but this one is about a topic people love. The rise of the NES.
The NES auctually came to the US in 1985. In December, it was auctually sent out in Northeastern markets like in New York and New Jersey. Finding out that it sold pretty well, Nintendo decided to sell it all around the US and Canada in 1986. There were barely any games out for it at the time but that was not going to be bad as Nintendo decided to make more games. The NES became such a hit that people were auctually starting to say "Fuck it" when it came to Atari. The NES had better graphics back then and Atari sales diminshed to the price being lowered and lowered and it finally died in 1988. But back to 86.
The NES was still looking for an official idenity in 1986. The greatest game in its time: Super Mario Bros. was selling pretty well and most of its other games were too. Heck, the Zapper was even created for a game called Duck Hunt. A game where you shot down ducks. Do a game like that now and you'd be sued. Thats another reason kids loved the NES. They were rebels. People who really could not care less about the best baseball player in their class or the bast kicker in Kickball was. The NES was there was of saying "Ha! Im better then you!" at something. Nerds finally had friends that liked something the same as them. 1986 was denifitely the Rookie year for the NES. It was finally getting buyers and people said "Hey wait a second" and changed their minds about what they thought about video games. The world was finally becoming addicting to video games and games were being requested so much that Nintendo did not have enough time to make new games.
1987 Denifitely was their peak of popularity. Kids in school were addicted, Parents were shaking their heads because kids payed too much attention to their Nintendo's, and Comic Book stores had things to sell. Great games like Castlevania and Mega Man debuted in 1987. Konami was pleased with Castlevania being so popular andCapcom was glad Mega Man was selling well after their disastrous debut with Ghost N Goblins. The NES was selling and things were looking up. The Super Mario Bros. series however, was not.
The problem with the Super Mario Bros. series was that Super Mario Bros. 2 was so hard that they did not think people in the US would buy it and had no sequel now for SMB that kids were literally writing millions of letters asking for it. So they had to act fast and took Doki Doki Panic and added Nintendo characters to it, changed some enemies, fixed some sceneray and items and viola! Super Mario Bros. 2 for the US. In Japan, it was called Super Mario Bros. Western. It sold very well when it was released in 1988 but was called the most mediocore of them all.
Back to 1987, many different companies wanted NES games. The WWF decided to try to cash in on the video game scene with WWF WrestleMania. Often called the second worst wrestling Nintendo game ever, it had a mix of bad graphics and music. Jaws also tried their luck in the video game scene with what else? Jaws. The game was impossible yet simple at the same time. You had to kill Jaws but it took alot of practice to not get bored by the time Jaws's health meter was at a half.
In late 1987 things were looking up. Millions of kids had NES's and stores that sold the games were flourshing. You were officially "Uncool" in school if you did not own an NES. Children in school would pass notes, talk about it at lunch, Hell, even make after school and recess clubs about it. The NES would not turn back until 1990 when things got depressing. But thats another story for another time. Nintendo had a little problem though. And its name was Sega.
Sega decided to bounce back in the gaming world with The Sega Master System. With games like Sonic The Hedgehog and Alex Kidd in The Miracle World, how could you lose? The Master System did have good selling for few months but mediocraty in graphics and music hurt the system so it ultimately bombed. Once again, this happened thanks to Nintendo.
In conclusion, Nintendo was destroying any other toy (Besides My Pet Monster) in the selling department. Nintendo had a great fanbase then and would continue to have a strong run as top dog in the toy business. But as we will soon find out, The NES would die thanks to alot of mistakes.
